First violinist Luke Hamby graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University, receiving a B.A. with a major in music education. Violin studies were with Ethel Lange, Dr. Theodore Brunson, and Prof. Joseph Coobe. He is co-concertmaster of the Imperial Valley Symphony and well-known as a free-lance performer and church musician in California and Arizona.
Second violinist Joseph Kaye graduated from Ball State University with a B.Mus. Violin studies were with Carolyn Sechrist and Sherry Kloss. He is co-concertmaster of the Imperial Valley Symphony, the award-winning string teacher for the El Centro Elementary School District (CA), and also teaches violin in his own studio.
Founding violinist/violist/arranger Joel Jacklich graduated from Western Michigan University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Music, cum laude, majoring in Music Education and with minors in Music Theory and Applied Music (Viola); and from the School of Performing Arts, United States International University in 1980, with a Master of Fine Arts in Orchestral Conducting. Studies in violin were with Elizabeth Heaton; viola with Kenneth Sanford and Dr. Joseph Work; and string pedagogy with Herbert Butler, Michele Ueda, and Toshiko Hasagawa. Jacklich is the founding music director/conductor of the Imperial Valley Symphony (1974-Present). After thirty-five years in education, he retired from Imperial Valley College (CA) in 2006 as Professor Emeritus where he had been the head of the music department for the previous seventeen years. There he received the Rafael Santos Award as IVC's Outstanding California Community College Professor (2006), the Academic Senate's Outstanding Faculty Award (1996), and the President's Distinguished Service Award (1991). He is also a lecturer in music at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus (1988-Present). He formerly taught music, English, and E.S.L. at Central Union High School in El Centro, CA (1974-89), was the music director/conductor of the Yuma Community Orchestra (AZ) (1985-87), and associate professor of music at Arizona Western College (1985-87). For the past thirty years he has served as an adjudicator for the Music Teachers' Association of California.
Cellist Karen Buck is a former principal cellist of the Imperial Valley Symphony. She graduated with a B.Mus. and M.Mus. from the University of Michigan where she was a student of Oliver Edel. She formerly taught strings in the Warren Woods (MI) public schools. She currently performs with both the Imperial Valley Symphony and the Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra in San Diego.
Occasionally other past or present members of the Imperial Valley Symphony may be called in to substitute due to schedule conflicts.
